Altmühltal Cycle Path, Rothenburg - Regensburg + Extension to Passau, 11-day-tour

Altmühltal Cycle Path with an extension from Regensburg to Passau...

On your bicycle tour from the Franconian Alb to the Danube, the Altmühl runs through fantastic stretches of land. Extensive forest and meadow landscapes determine the character of the upper reaches. In the Altmühltal Nature Park, narrow valleys and bizarre rock formations characterize the landscape. Medieval cities and castles bear witness to an eventful past. Along the Danube you get through the fertile plain of the Gäuboden and the foothills of the Bavarian Forest. Past Straubing, the heart of the Gäuboden, you cycle to Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest and finally you reach the city of three rivers, Passau.

This tour version is an extension for the following tours:

Travel days

1. Day: arrival - Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Individual arrival to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. On the first evening you can take a walk with the night watchman (incl.). Dreamy alleys and a protective city wall – step through one of the mighty city gates into another world.

2. Day: Rothenburg ob der Tauber - Herrieden/Ansbach (approx. 47-54 km)

You cycle through the upper Altmühl valley past Leutershausen, whose most famous son Gustav Weißkopf is remembered by a monument. The medieval ambience can still be felt at your stage destination Herrieden. Alternatively, you can spend the night in Ansbach.

3. Day: Herrieden/Ansbach - region Weißenburg (approx. 53-67 km)

Passing Gunzenhausen you will reach Markt Berolzheim. You cycle either directly along the Altmühl to Treuchtlingen to relax in the Altmühl thermal spa or with a detour to Weißenburg, where you leave the Altmühl shortly before Markt Berolzheim and ride directly to Weißenburg.

4. Day: region Weißenburg - Eichstätt (approx. 43-53 km)

The most scenic part of your bicycle tour begins from Treuchtlingen. The glistening white dolomite rocks protrude imposingly from the wooded slopes and ridges. In Eichstätt, it is worth taking a tour of the residence square or visiting the cathedral of the episcopal and university town.

5. Day: Eichstätt - Beilngries (approx. 45 km)

Today you have the opportunity to choose between various sightseeing options, such as the large nature reserve of the Gungoldinger Wacholderheide or the Hirschberg Castle. The destination of your stage is Beilngries. The historic old town centre with its town houses is surrounded by a well-preserved city wall.

6. Day: Beilngries - Kelheim (approx. 53 km)

After visiting the sluice of the Main-Danube Canal, you ride towards the city of Dietfurt. You spend the night in Kelheim, where you can visit the imposing Liberation Hall on the Michelsberg.

7. Day: Kelheim - Regensburg (approx. 40 km)

At Weltenburg you can experience the Danube breakthrough by ship (not included in the travel price). Now it is not far to your stage destination Regensburg. The medieval cityscape with St. Peter's Cathedral and the Stone Bridge as well as over 1000 individual monuments is waiting to be discovered in the UNESCO World Heritage city.

8. Day: Regensburg - Straubing (approx. 53 km)

Via the Nibelungen Bridge and Walhalla-Allee (alley) you can reach the signposted "Tour de Baroque" cycle route and ride to Donaustauf. Visible from afar, the famous Walhalla, the "Temple of German Honor", rises above the Danube Valley. You cycle further on the Danube dam and past the Geisling barrage to Straubing, known for its baroque town houses and the picturesque town square. The "Roman treasure trove" in the Gäuboden museum is world-famous and well worth a visit.

9. Day: Straubing - Deggendorf (approx. 40 km)

Via Oberalteich you reach Bogen at the foot of the steeply sloping Bogenberg (hill). The path continues to Metten, where, in good weather, the double towers of the church stand out brightly from the gently rolling hills. Today's place to stay is Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest.

10. Day: Deggendorf - Passau (approx. 60 km)

Today you follow the "Tour de Baroque" once again. Via Niederaltaich, one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Bavaria, you reach the small village of Winzer. You then continue to Vilshofen. On the left bank of the Danube you cycle to the Kachlet hydroelectric power station. After crossing the Danube, you will reach the city of three rivers Passau, steeped in history.

11. Day: Passau - departure

Individual departure from Passau.

On the throughout signed Altmühltal cycle path, you cycle without gradients on fortified forest and field paths, small low traffic side roads as well as on mostly fine graveled cycle paths. The cycle paths on the river banks of the Danube are flat throughout. You mainly ride on asphalted or well-paved, almost traffic-free paths.
